Hebrews 12:1-2

The Heart of a Runner

Not long ago, I went to the doctor.  I was not having any problems, rather it was just a yearly check-up.  Even so, I was nervous.  Don't ask me why.  I guess I'm just a bit uncomfortable sitting in a cold, sterile room with only a hospital gown on.  I was feeling even  more awkward as my doctor was not available so I was assigned to someone I didn't know.  As the doctor came into the room, my palms began to sweat despite the cold draft I felt coming through the back of the gown.  After she asked several questions, she pulled out her stethoscope and placed it on my chest.  Silence invaded the room as she listened intently to my heart. "Ah," she said, "you have the heart of a runner.  Your heartbeat is strong and steady."  Seriously???  Awesome!!!  Those few words made all the running and all the hard work so worth it!  We began to talk about running.  I shared with her how I have never ran in my life until last fall, that it is difficult for me and that I really don't enjoy it.  "So, why do you run?", she asked.  I smiled and said, "Well, my husband and I are adopting two children from Africa.  Running is a visual for me in our adoption process.  It reminds me that it will not always be easy or fun, but it is good."

Since that appointment, each time that I run I am reminded of my doctor's words.  Now, while I run, I pray,

"God, please give me the heart of a runner.
Make my heart beat
strong and steady for you."

Life is not always easy...or fun.  Sometimes it is very difficult (been there and done that) BUT I don't ever want to quit MY race.  I don't want to fail.  One day when I stand before God, the Great Physician, I want to hear Him say,

"Lisa, you have the heart of a runner.
Your heartbeat is strong and steady FOR ME.
You have ran a good race.
Well done."
