Hebrews 12:1-2
"...let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith..."

Memorial

It was last September, in Branson, when Kurt shared his heart to me about adoption.  While we were there, he wanted us to purchase something that would help us "remember" and symbolize the work God was doing in our lives.  The Bible actually teaches on the importance of "memorials".  In the book of Joshua, after God allowed the Israelites to cross the Jordan River on dry ground, he instructed the people to take twelve stones from the middle of the river and to carry them over to the other side and set them up.  Joshua 4:7 said that the stones were to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.  The most powerful description of the symbolism of the stone memorial appears in verses 21-24...

"...In the future when your descendants ask their fathers,
'What do these stones mean?' tell them,
'Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.'
For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan
before you until you had crossed over.
The Lord your God did to the Jordan
just what he had done to the Red Sea
when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.
He did this so that all the peoples of the earth
might know that THE HAND OF THE LORD
IS POWERFUL and so THAT YOU MIGHT
ALWAYS FEAR THE LORD YOUR GOD."

Here is the memorial we chose for our Branson trip.  It hangs in our kitchen where we see it every day alongside two empty frames waiting to be filled with two little faces.

  2. Memorials are like 'memory pegs'....and I sure need them to remind me of God's faithfulness, when I sometimes forget in difficult circumstances that don't resolve in 'my' timing.
