"Now faith is being sure of what we hope
for and certain of what we do not see."
The Bible states what faith is. However, I sometimes find it difficult to actually define faith when sharing with someone. My faith is in God, it is deep within me but hard to put into words. So, with the help of Webster's, I began to dissect how the Bible defines faith.
Faith is being sure...
Sure is secure or safe. That which will not fail; always effective. That
which can be relied upon; trustworthy. That which cannot be doubted,
questioned or disputed; absolutely true; certain. Having or showing
no doubt; positive; confident.
...sure of what we hope for....
Hope is a feeling that what is wanted will happen, desire accompanied
by expectation. A person or thing on which one may base some hope;
to want and expect. To trust or rely.
and certain of what we do not see.
Certain is fixed, settled or determined. Sure; inevitable (that which cannot
be avoided, certain to happen). Not to be doubted; unquestionable.
Not failing, reliable; dependable.
So, here is my attempt to verbally define faith:
Now faith is being secure and safe in knowing that my God will never fail.
He can be relied upon; He is dependable; He is trustworthy.
I don't need to doubt Him, question Him or argue with Him for
He is true to His Word and true to His character.
On Him, my hope can rest positive and confident.
I will fix my eyes on Him, be settled in Him,
HE IS GOD.
